At PJ Spreading, Our Products Make the Job Easy

We are now selling and distributing a new bedding product made from wheat straw. It is produced by The Straw Boss, a company located in Elgin Ontario. The product is pelleted wheat straw that is then crumbled before installed in the poultry barn.  Here is an overview of the process to make this product:

• Straw bales are purchased from local farms.

• Straw is chopped.

• Chopped straw goes through heat treatment for a duration of 4 minutes at 180 degrees.

• The heat treated straw is then pelleted.

• The straw pellets are then crumbled and rolled flat.

• The product is then installed in poultry barns at approximately ⅜” thick.  As the chickens grow, the bedding grows as well, eventually expanding to 2”+.

Here are some of the benefits of this product:

• Heat treated:  Reduces salmonella, bacteria and mold.

• Absorbent:  With greater surface area, straw pellets allow for greater absorbency and faster drying.

• Dust-Extracted:  Provides a healthier environment for poultry and workers.

• Animal Health:  Finely chopped straw components create a softer bedding that increases animal health especially foot pad health.

• Biodegradable:  Biodegrades much quicker than wood shavings which reduces the size of manure piles.

• Renewable:  Straw pellets are renewable and great for the environment.

• Value-add:  Straw pellets create premium bedding by-product providing income or fertilizer to farmers.  Straw pellet bedding has batter composting characteristics than pine shaving bedding.
